What's is a Tona Mask? It is an animal mask that represents the artist. In ancient Mexico is was believed that animals and people were connected and share a common destiny. The students choose an animal they felt best represents them and created a paper mask.

Third grade student, Carly G., is grouting her mosaic coaster tile. Students are finishing their coasters this week and will be beginning them home soon. The question discussed in the art critique was: how does art represent personal expression, exploration, and / or insight? The entire second grade are in the middle of a stitching unit. The flower is an example of a flower stitching project by Adeline Robbins. Brynn Madden brought in another textile art project she is creating at home. Second graders are really excited about textile art.

Second graders are using their imagination to create a new composite species. They started with sketching imaginary animals using parts of three real animals. Next they used the sketch for inspiration and created the imaginary animal out of clay.

After 2nd graders completed the still life painting unit in the style of Henri Matisse they starred another unit inspired by him. Students learned Matisse is also famous for cut paper collage art. Students created cut paper collages using both geometric and organic shapes.

Mrs. Snyder's kindergarten class painted both three dimensional and two dimensional art! After they finished painting their 3D pinch pots students painted a 2D picture on paper. It was a wonderful experience for all.

All grade levels will be participating in an art unit on clay. Today kindergarten, first grade, third grade students created art projects out of clay. Kindergarten learned about the element of art: form and created pinch pots. First graders expanded on their previous knowledge of a pinch pot and created a bird in a nest. The nest started as a pinch pot. Third graders created decorative clay masks using the 3S's: score, slip, and smooth. Second graders will begin their clay unit later in the school year. Over all it was a very productive day in the Art Studio.

Ocean City Primary School has the privilege of displaying artwork in our county’s board office during the month of October. Third graders were invited on a voluntary basis to create an extra art project, wire sculptures of a full body person in action, to showcase a three-dimensional project as well as two-dimensional drawings.
