GOAL

Use the design process to solve a problem

Objective

1. Predict how many pennies your boat can hold

2. Test the prediction and record the results

Vocabulary Review

Engineer: Someone who designs a solution to a problem

Problem: What we are trying to solve (keeping a boat afloat)

Solution: Our idea, our design, our answer to the problem (our boat)

STEP 1: Think

What kind of boat will float best?

Is it...

a large boat?

small boat?

flat boat?

round boat?

wide boat?

tall boat?

What else might make the boat float better?

STEP 2: Plan

Sketch you our ideas and choose one to build. The video below might help...

STEP 3: BUILD

Build it!

If your boat isn't perfect, no worries! Just have fun.

STEP 4: TEST

Fill a pan or bowl with water and place your boat, put pennies into it...record how many pennies it held before sinking.
