SOMERS POINT
STEM LAB

2nd-grade-ville
Steve and his wife Trisha have decided to move their family to a small community called 2nd-grade-ville. The whole family was excited about the big move...until they got there. The entire town is completely empty! There are no roads, houses, stores, or schools. Steve and Trisha stopped by the STEM Lab and asked our 2nd graders to build the community. Our students broke into teams to create different buildings for 2nd-grade-ville that they will design on CAD software and print on our 3D printer.
First, we asked the question..."What are the needs of a family?"
We discussed the question as a class and came up with some ideas.

Next, we identified the buildings that would fufill these needs. Students broke into design teams and began brainstorming building plans by creating lego buildings.

Once the plans were complete, students were introduced to CAD software for the first time. They manipulated basic geometric figures to to assemble a 3D digital model of their design.

Seeing our designs come to life for the first time on a 3D printer. We infused art into our community by coloring our white plastic buildings to make them unqiue and colorful.

Welcome to 2nd-grade-ville
