4th Grade Spanish students see their 3D printed Alebrijes for the first time. They painted their creations with bright and colorful patterns just as traditional Mexican folk-artists do.

8th Grade STEM engineers test the aerodynamics of their C02 car designs in a virtual wind tunnel. They analyzed the flow lines and identified areas causing drag. Students recorded videos of the test to be included in their online portfolios. Check out Maggie's test, which produced an average drag coefficient of .79!

8th Grade brainstorms ideas for aerodynamic C02 cars
Our 8th grade engineers have been working through the design process in order to create 3D printed aerodynamic C02 cars. We asked the question, "What factors determine the acceleration of a C02 car?" We conducted research on acceleration, mass, and drag and began brainstorming ideas on our dry erase tables!

Middle school venture students test their 3D printed rockets and calculate average flight distances. So far, 8th grade student Molly M. logged the furthest flight at 17.52 meters!

8th Grade STEM C02 cars are getting more elaborate. This week students applied Newton's formula A = F/M to their designs and slimmed down their cars. Click on the image below to see some of the designs in progress.
This particular building is a local pet store that this student designed called Bruce's Cutest Pets. Next, students will arrange their buildings in 2ndgradeville and create maps for vistors to navigate the community.

Our First STEM Class..
Our 8th Graders were asked the question, "What is STEM?" Originally, most students responded with answers that explained science experiments they had done. After our first class, in which students tackled thier first engineering challenge "Skyscrapers", these were their responses:

Our LEGO engineer team completes stage 1 of our Golden Gate Bridge replica. The scaled towers stand 28.5 inches tall, nearly 314 times smaller than the towers of the actual bridge.

Mrs. Brannigan's class plasters their mini-golf figures for their custom mini-golf holes. Mrs. Thoms was nice enough to lend us the art room and supplies. It was a bit messy! Thanks!

3rd grade venture students engineer scaled replicas of the Ocean City Ferris Wheel. The students completed the build under a $250 KNEX budget and calculated the ratio of their replica to the actual ferris wheel.

Click on the image above to register for the 2016 Somers Point Science Fair. This year's event will feature an interactive STEM Expo for members of the whole family to try out cool hands on activities! Robots, squishy circuits, C02 racing, 3D printing, and more!
This year our 8th graders will be designing aerodynamic C02 dragsters! Students will utilize the engineering design process to create a stylish and fast vehicle. Design teams will use CAD software to build a 3D model, which will be tested in a virtual wind tunnel. Once optimized, students will print their cars on our 3D printer and compete in the Somers Point STEM Lab Race Night! Check the STEM Lab Daily (right) as we will document this project as we complete it, more to come!

Mrs. Bullard's 3rd grade class designs packaging systems to safely transport an egg from NJ to Ohio! Students in Parma, Ohio will send thier designs to the STEM lab and we will host a live video chat to reveal the results!
